Description
Silvered bronze plaque, 8.5x5x10.4cm (3.4”x4.1”), by E. Lindberg. Zeus seated on throne being presented the modern Olympic Pentathlon winner by ancient Greek female holding olive wreath above the winner’s head. Rev. 13-line inscription in French between 5 olive wreaths symbolizing the 5 Olympic rings, and two mermaids holding each other symbolizing the Meeting of the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans on completion of the Panama Canal. “Presented by the Panama-Pacific Exposition San Francisco 1915 to Pierre de Coubertin, Renovator of the Olympic Games, on the Occasion of the creation of Pentathlon Modernue (in) Stockholm 1912, will be presented at each Olympiad to the Winner who will guard it till the following Olympiad”. After 100+ years the IOC is presently considering replacing this event. Extremely rare. One of only 5 plaques. EF. ($5,000)
