Gyarmati was a water polo player at the Melbourne 1956 Olympic Games when the Soviet Union invaded Hungary on November 4. The Hungarian and Russian water polo teams got in a fight on December 6 during a match (“Blood in the swimming pool”) – many of the Hungarian players did not return home after the Olympic Games ended.
