A few light spots around edges, o.w. EF. Plus a few large size pages of the New York Times, July 12, 1924, with articles about the Paris Olympic Games, including the 400M finals on July 11. Pages enclosed in archival clear plastic. Plus Taylor’s Pair of Black Leather Running Shoes, with spikes, Size 10. Well worn, Fine. The 400M finals July 11, 1924 were shown in the film “Chariots of Fire” where Eric Liddell won first place. Beautiful Art Nouvean Vase Illustrating Sports of the Stockholm 1912 Olympic Games by Celebrated Artist Carl Hjalmar Norrström.

Etched bronze, colored and gilded, 48cm (18.9”) high, 24cm (9.5”) wide. Three figures of Nike, goddess of Victory holding a laurel wreath in each hand divides three panels of sports illustrations. In the first panel a group of four runners is trying to catch Nike’s winners wreath. The second panel shows five young men playing soccer, a discus thrower and a javelin thrower in upper right in background. The third panel depicts four tennis players in a game of Doubles, three tennis players waiting their turn in background. There is a gold border of olive branches around the top, the bottom half is decorated with numerous green olive wreathes and gold flowers. The vase stands on four small balls. Signed on bottom gold border “C.H. Norrström 1912”. C.H. Norrström (1853-1923) studied at the Royal Academy in Stockholm, also at the Ecole des Arts Decoratifs in Paris from 1877 to1880. On his return he lived in Eskilstuna, later in Storängen. He was a sculptor, a painter and celebrated for his bronze etched artworks. He received a gold medal at the Paris 1900 World Exposition, and his works are displayed at the Stockholm National Museum. The first time Olympic events are depicted on a work of art. and Lighter of the Olympic Cauldron at the Opening Ceremony, July 19, 1952. Carved wood, 23cm (9.1”) high, made by Kalevala Koru (KK). Two silver panels are attached on front and back, both engraved with writing in Finnish: “Helsinki XV Olympic Games / The Lighter of the Olympic Fire / Paavo Nurmi” (translated), and Olympic rings. The back panel reads “Torch Relay Committee/19.7.1952”. Paavo Nurmi, “The Flying Finn”, was a dominant runner in the 1920’s winning 3 gold medals and 1 silver medal in Antwerp 1920; 5 gold medals in Paris 1924 and 1 gold and 2 silver medals in Amsterdam 1928. He was honored to light the Olympic flame at the opening of the Helsinki 1952 Games. He is pictured on the 1940 and 1952 official posters. Nurmi presented the tankard to a friend, and his family kept it till now. Panels with inscriptions toned, EF.

Victorious athlete carried by jubilant teammates. Harrison Dillard won gold in 1948 in 100m and in the 4x100m Relay. In 1952 Helsinki he won gold in his specialty, 100m Hurdles, and again in the 4x100m Relay. Housed in its presentation case, EF. Medal mottled toning, EF. ($120,000) Terri Dillard About her Father “World’s Fastest Man” – “World’s Fastest Hurdler” winning gold in the 1948 Olympics 100 meter sprint race after not qualifying for his specialty race, the 100 meter hurdles. This feat has been nicknamed “Pulling a Dillard”. So far Harrison Dillard is the only man to accomplish this feat and the only man to win gold in both the 100 meter sprints and the 110 meter hurdles. Holding both titles of “World’s Fastest Man” and “World’s Fastest Sprinter”. Dillard was inspired by his hometown hero, Jesse Owens, and like him, he won 4 gold medals. The 100 meter race that Harrison Dillard won gold in 1948 is the first ever photo finish in Olympic history. And the first time that Omega, the official timekeeper of the Olympics, used their photo finish technique to determine the outcome of an Olympic event. It is believed that Harrison Dillard was the first African American athlete to grace the cover of a major U.S. news magazine – Newsweek. Born in Cleveland Ohio he faced numerous hurdles. Harrison Dillard was frail and sickly when he was a baby as he suffered from a disease called Rickets. While most children walked by 12 months, Harrison could not even stand up until he was 16 months old. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the all black 92nd Infantry Division in Italy. After he returned from World War II, he tried out for the London 1948 Olympic Games. And the rest is history.
